The Boo Radleys - 1993-09-13 - Black Session #34, Studio 106, Paris

Firstly, I hope you all had an excellent Christmas and got everything you wanted from it! Now, down to business: The Black Sessions are a long-running French radio session, which started in 1992 and is still going to this day. There were a lot of great bands on it back in the 90's and early 00's, (I have 10-15 sessions by other bands to post in future) but having looked at the artists who have recently appeared on the show it seems to be going downhill. This was the Boo Radley's first Black Session; the second was in 1998, promoting their final album, Kingsize. The songs here are taken from their first two albums, however this session took place before their mid-90's commercial peak so don't expect the likes of Wake Up Boo!, the songs here are a bit more shoegaze-y. This is pretty rare and it took me a while to find it online, but here it is in all its glory to enjoy. Link is my own, enjoy!

Inspiral Carpets - BBC Radio One Sessions

This is a pretty exhaustive collection of BBC sessions from throughout the career of Oldham's Inspiral Carpets. Not sure if it collects every session they ever did or just some though. Anyway, the 21 songs here span the band's four albums, as well as their unique takes on the Stones' Gimme Shelter and Black Sabbath's Paranoid.  The sound quality on this is excellent, as you would expect from a collection of Radio Broadcasts.  This on top of the generous tracklist make this a worthy download for any fan of the band.

Oasis - Be Here Now - The Complete Acoustic Collection

Apologies for the lack of posts on this blog recently, but hopefuly this can go some way towards making up for it. I must admit this blog is starting to look strinkingly similar to Jim's excellent Rkid blog, but in my defence I have been working on putting this together for the past few days and would be a waste not to post it! Anyway, this is a complete (or as near to complete as anyone could want!) record of all the acoustic sessions and live performances done by Oasis in the Be Here Now era of 1997-98.  Unsurprisingly the vast majority of these are sung my Noel; there is only one Liam sung track although it is the excellent 'Live By The Pool' version of Stand By Me. There are too many excellent performances of classics on here to pick highlights, but one thing I would say is this is not for the casual fan due to the sheer volume of music and multiple versions of several tracks. For anyone else though, this should be a very worthwhile download.

Proud Mary - Raise A Glass (Live, Demos And Rarities)

Proud Mary are a band that were formed in the late 90s in Manchester, and are notable for being the first band signed to Noel Gallagher's record label, Sour Mash. They have only released 3 albums in the last 10 years, so decided to take matters into my own hands and collect everything else I could find and turn it into a compilation. I called it Raise A Glass after a line from their cover of The Stones' Salt Of The Earth. Artwork was also made by me. The Coral - Locks And Keys

The Coral are a great, underrated band who have been going for over 10 years now. In that time they have released 6 studio albums and, as this collection showcases, recoded a lot more songs. This is made up of various demos, radio sessions and live performances, and must surely collect pretty much everything not commercially available that the band has done. Sound quality varies between songs, is good on demos and radio sessions but some of the live tracks are a bit worse (still very much listenable, though). Highlights of this exhaustive collection include Mirrors Collide, the demo of Pass It On and D'yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?, an Oasis cover. This collection is extremely rare, it's not on any other blogs and only ever seen it once anywhere online, on the excellent Bobjuice forums. This artwork (not made by me) comes included in the download. This is an essential package for any Coral fan, an absolute goldmine of rarities.

Mansun - Revlon Revolution (Live and Sessions)

Mansun were an excellent band who formed around the Britpop era and I guess could be lumped in with Britpop but their music is often less accessible (a 9-minute song called Cancer, anyone?). They got a hell of a lot of stick from the music press; in fact the liner notes for their best-of compilation show a load of negative comments from journalists next to each song. However, I think they were a great band with some excellent songs, many of which are on this bootleg. Their sound could probably be described as somewher between Suede, the Manics and Oasis. This is made up of various radio sessions and a few live recordings, and as a result the sound is of varying quality, but is mostly good. Both well known songs and rare B-sides are included on here, making it a worthwile collection for any Mansun fan. Highlights include Stripper Vicar (faster verison than found on record), Take It Easy Chicken and Wide Open Space. I yet again made this artwork; quite happy with it and proud to report I've never posted anything on here without arrtwork, long may it continue! This is obviously not recommended for those who don't really know the band; allow me to point you in the direction of the Legacy best-of and Attack Of The Grey Lanterns LP. However, those who do should find plenty to enjoy. Link and artwork are my own.

Ride - Black Session 1994

Ride were a shoegaze band from Oxford, although by this point in their career they had a taken a more Britpop direction, which I prefer to their earlier stuff. Their album Carnival Of Light inspired the name and banner of this blog, so I thought it would be fitting to post some stuff by them. This is a French radio session from 1994, and contains a good mix of earlier tracks and material from the Carnival of Light era. I haven't been able to listen to this, but as it is a radio session its reasonable to assume the sound quality will be good. The singer's voice is a bit flat and won't be for everyone, but if you've already listened to Ride or aren't fussed about the vocals this is recommended to you.

The Action - Uptight And Outasight

The Action were a 60s mod band from London. Not sure they ever released a studio album but there are plenty of compilations, including a 'lost album', available. This 27-song compilation comprises all their original BBC sessions, as well as a reunion gig from 1998 that takes up disc 2. With this many songs it's bound to be patchy, but there are some excellent songs here: I'll Keep On Holding On, Never Ever and Shadows And Reflections all stand out.  Most of these are Action originals, as far as I know, and the second disc is bogged down a bit by covers of old blues numbers. If you want to get into the Action this is probably not a very good place to start, but if you're already familiar with them you can do worse than to download this. Recommended to anyone who likes the Mod bands of the 60s or early Small Faces.

Cast - 2010 BBC Radio Merseyside Session

This was a session Cast did soon after they reformed last year, to promote the All Change 15th anniversary tour. The band are on good form, as anyone who saw them live (including me) can testify. No new tracks; all are taken from All Change, with the exception of Live The Dream which is from the follow up, Mother Nature calls (well worth hunting for if you haven't got it). A good performance with great sound quality but by no means essential. I again made the artwork (on a roll today!) but for some reason it came out really pixelated. It's not included in the download but as far as I know there is no other artwork available so this will have to do!
